Visual Stress Assessment (Crossbow Overlays)
A Visual Stress assessment identifies whether a child or young person experiences visual discomfort when reading, which can cause symptoms such as words appearing to move, blur, or flicker on the page. The assessment uses the Crossbow Education overlay system to determine whether coloured overlays can improve reading comfort, speed, and accuracy.

Our process
The assessment involves a structured screening process in which the young person is asked to read under different conditions, with and without a range of coloured overlays. Their reading rate and comfort are monitored to identify whether a specific overlay colour provides a measurable benefit. The process is non-invasive, straightforward, and typically well-tolerated by children and young people.
After the Assessment
Following the assessment, families are advised on the findings, including whether a specific overlay is recommended for use in everyday reading. Where visual stress is identified, practical guidance is provided on how to use the overlay across learning environments. If findings suggest further investigation may be beneficial – such as a colorimetry assessment – this will be discussed.

Working With Families and Professionals
“The team worked together seamlessly and we felt supported throughout. It never felt rushed or impersonal. The focus on our child’s strengths as well as their needs was reassuring, and the outcomes have been genuinely helpful in moving forward.”
“The assessment and report from Live to Learn were exceptionally clear and practical. The recommendations were specific, realistic, and easy to translate into provision within school. Having the educational context so carefully considered made a real difference.”
“From the very beginning, the process felt thoughtful and well coordinated. The assessment was thorough, but what stood out most was how clearly everything was explained. The report gave us real clarity and helped us understand not just the diagnosis, but what support would actually help our child in school and day-to-day life.”
