Diagnostic Dyslexia Assessments

A diagnostic dyslexia assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of literacy development that explores how an individual processes written language and acquires reading and spelling skills over time. It draws on recognised diagnostic frameworks, including ICD-11, and combines standardised assessment with specialist interpretation to establish whether a profile consistent with dyslexia is present.

The assessment considers underlying cognitive and linguistic processes that support literacy, such as phonological awareness, rapid naming, verbal memory, processing speed, and orthographic knowledge, alongside measures of reading, spelling, and written expression. Findings are interpreted in relation to developmental expectations, educational history, and access to instruction, with careful consideration of overlapping or co-occurring needs, including attention, language, and emotional factors.

Our process

The assessment combines standardised assessment tools with specialist clinical interpretation to build a detailed picture of how the individual processes written language.

It explores underlying cognitive and linguistic processes that support literacy – including phonological awareness, rapid naming, verbal memory, processing speed, and orthographic knowledge — alongside measures of reading, spelling, and written expression. Findings are interpreted in relation to developmental expectations, educational history, and access to instruction, with careful consideration of overlapping or co-occurring needs.

After the Assessment

Where diagnostic criteria are met, the outcome includes a clear diagnostic conclusion, a clinical formulation, and identification of strengths and areas of need. The report also includes neuroaffirmative, practical recommendations, guidance for reasonable adjustments, and educationally applicable provision recommendations.

Reports are written clearly and structured to support use within SEN Support Plans, EHCP applications, annual reviews, and SEND Tribunal proceedings.

All reports include Education Consultant oversight to ensure findings are presented in a format that is meaningful and usable within education settings.

Our diagnostic dyslexia assessments are inclusive of an Education Consultant’s input, with regards to the format of the ‘strengths’, ‘needs’, ‘outcomes’ and ‘provisions’, ensuring the report is easily transferable and applicable within education settings.

Working With Families and Professionals

“The team worked together seamlessly and we felt supported throughout. It never felt rushed or impersonal. The focus on our child’s strengths as well as their needs was reassuring, and the outcomes have been genuinely helpful in moving forward.”

“The assessment and report from Live to Learn were exceptionally clear and practical. The recommendations were specific, realistic, and easy to translate into provision within school. Having the educational context so carefully considered made a real difference.”

“From the very beginning, the process felt thoughtful and well coordinated. The assessment was thorough, but what stood out most was how clearly everything was explained. The report gave us real clarity and helped us understand not just the diagnosis, but what support would actually help our child in school and day-to-day life.”
