Diagnostic Autism Assessments

A structured, evidence-based multidisciplinary assessment to determine whether an individual meets ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR criteria of being autistic

Gold-standard autism assessments are provided using ADI-R and ADOS-2 components, alongside Clinical Psychologist input and education consultancy, to ensure clear outcomes and educational accountability.

Overview

Our autism assessments follow a structured and comprehensive process that brings together clinical observation, developmental history, and multidisciplinary expertise.

The assessment uses recognised gold-standard diagnostic tools, including the ADOS-2 and ADI-R, alongside clinical judgement to ensure diagnostic accuracy, while recognising the diversity of autistic presentation across individuals.

Findings are interpreted in context, taking into account:

Evidence of “masking” behaviours
Co-occurring differences and diagnoses
Mental health concerns
Environmental and educational factors

The focus of the assessment is to understand the young person’s strengths, communication profile, learning style, and support needs — not solely to determine diagnosis.

The Assessment Process

1. Initial Contact

An initial enquiry allows us to understand your concerns and determine whether a full diagnostic assessment is appropriate.

2. Information Gathering Stage

Background information is gathered from parents/carers and, where appropriate, educational settings. This helps us build a detailed a holistic profile of the young person.

3. Autism Screening

Completion of screening measures, including the AQ10, for your peace of mind.

4. ADI-R Parent Interview

(up to 3 hours) A semi structured developmental interview conducted with parents/carers to explore early development, communication, behaviour, and patterns of interest.

5. ADOS-2 Observation

(up to 1.5 hours) A semi structured, standardised observation with the young person to assess social communication, interaction, and flexibility.

6. Clinical Psychologist Appointment

(up to 1 hour) A direct appointment with our Clinical Psychologist to explore presentation, mental health, and formulation.

7. Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Review

All assessment findings are reviewed collectively to ensure diagnostic and clinical accuracy. Our MDT includes: ADI-R assessor, ADOS-2 assessor, Clinical Psychologist, Occupational Therapist, Speech and Language Therapist and SpLD assessor.

8. Report and Debrief

A comprehensive written report is shared, followed by a feedback appointment to discuss findings, recommendations, and next steps.

9. Education Support Offer

Where appropriate, ongoing Education Consultant support is available to assist with implementation within educational settings, as part of home education, or for a SEN / EHCP process.

Working With Families and Professionals

“The team worked together seamlessly and we felt supported throughout. It never felt rushed or impersonal. The focus on our child’s strengths as well as their needs was reassuring, and the outcomes have been genuinely helpful in moving forward.”

“The assessment and report from Live to Learn were exceptionally clear and practical. The recommendations were specific, realistic, and easy to translate into provision within school. Having the educational context so carefully considered made a real difference.”

“From the very beginning, the process felt thoughtful and well coordinated. The assessment was thorough, but what stood out most was how clearly everything was explained. The report gave us real clarity and helped us understand not just the diagnosis, but what support would actually help our child in school and day-to-day life.”
